Replacing a Lost Tax Return with a Copy Tax Return

Keeping track of important documents is definitely something that you should consider, because getting a copy tax return is definitely not the most fun thing to do. You should really consider finding a great way to file and keep track of your documents, whether in hard copy or computer file. You may even want to keep both types just to be on the safe side. If you lose a document, you definitely have some options when it comes to getting a replacement tax return. Here is a guide that will help you get your previous year tax return in the event that you lose it.

Find the Valid Forms

The first thing that you will want to do is determine which year you need. You should always keep the past six years worth of tax returns when you are filing your important documents. Look to make sure that you have each of these in your file, and if you do not then you need to get the valid form to order a copy tax return. The form 4506T-EZ is the one that you will need to request a new tax document. For instance, if you are missing your 2010 tax return, you will want to fill the form out to request that particular year. Make sure that you leave nothing blank on the form so that it is processed quickly and adequately.

Sending it to the IRS

Once you complete the form, you will then send it to the IRS. They have two separate options for you to choose from. You can choose a tax transcript, which is basically all of the pertinent information that is included in the original tax return, but in a condensed version. You can also request an actual copy tax return. This is going to look much like the original, and include all of the different information that may be needed. Depending on what you use your past tax returns for, a transcript may be all that you will need. Some people just like to keep the detailed records in case.

The Waiting Period

Once you have sent the form in to the IRS, you will have to wait for a few weeks until you actually receive the copy tax return. They tell you that it can actually be up to sixty days, but usually it does not take entirely that long. You can even get it in as little as fifteen days, depending on how backed up they are. The more accurate your form is, the quicker you will receive your copy. Just remember, if you need it more quickly you can even go to the IRS office in your area and see if they can pull up a transcript for you to use until you get the other documents in from the mail.

Store It Safely

You really have to store your documents safely once you get them. Losing the tax return is definitely not something that you intend to do, but if you can keep them organized and together you will avoid having to get a copy tax return altogether. Simply print your returns each year and put them together in a certain place that you will remember. Most people choose to keep them with other important documents in a safe, or in a safety deposit box. These are great ways to avoid ever losing your tax return in the first place. The good news is that if it is lost, you do not have to worry about how to go about getting a copy tax return.
