Getting a Copy Tax Return for Your Records

Why You May Need a Tax Return Copy

Sometimes you may come to a point in your life where you will need a tax return copy for some reason. There are many reasons why this will be important. Many people will keep a copy tax in their filed for just such an occasion, however if you haven’t then you will need to obtain one. One reason that you may need one is to verify income. This is usually when you are seeking financing for a large purchase. You might also need to provide one if you are applying for federal aid for any reason. Either way, the need for a copy tax return will arise eventually.

Tax Return Transcripts

The first type of copy tax return that you may request from the IRS is called a tax return transcript. These are copies of your original tax return documents. They will shoe most of the line items that were included as well as any additional forms that you may have provided at the time the tax return was filed. What it does not include is any changes that were made by you or the IRS after the return was filed. In most cases, this will be exactly what is needed in order to provide the information needed by lending institutions and various other places that may request this information.

Tax Account Transcript

The second type of copy tax return that may be provided by the IRS is called a tax account transcript. These are a little different from tax return transcripts. They will provide much of the same information such as line items and special forms that may have been used, but they also provide additional information that may be important. The main difference is that a tax account transcript will show any of the changes or adjustments that were made after the original filing. Some common pieces of information shown either of the copies of your tax returns included your gross income, taxable income, marital status and other important information.

Getting a Copy Tax Return

If you are ever in a position where you will need access to a copy tax return then you will need to know how to acquire one. There are a few ways that you can go about this. The first way is the simplest. If you used an accountant or tax service, whether in person or online, chances are that they will maintain a copy of your previous tax returns. You can request a copy from your accountant and in most cases this will be provided free of charge. If you filed online, you can usually pull up a printable tax return from the web site. The other two ways to get a copy tax return are through the IRS. You can call to request a free copy of either type of transcript. They are free of charge if you request them for the most recent 3 years. If you are requesting any transcripts that are older you will have to mail a special form. The form is called form 4506 and with it you can usually request a copy tax return for the last 6 years. When requesting older tax returns, you will have to include a fee for each return requested.

Fees Involved

In most cases, only your most recent tax return will be required, If this is the case, then you will should not have to pay. Simply call the IRS or print the request form and mail it in. Be sure to specify the specific year copy tax return that you require.
